Digital Art Helpful Tips

What Do You Consider Digital Art?

This is a try at my hand doing Art Digitally, Flowers In Fields.  I used an image of wildflowers added a few overlays of color dots to symbolize blooms.  Next, I used a stylus and program to simulate bush strokes.  Lastly, I used a few apps to enhance and High Resolution the image.

Digital art is an artistic work or practice that uses digital technology as part of the creative or presentation process. Since the 1970s, various names have been used to describe the process, including computer art and multimedia art. Digital art is itself placed under the larger umbrella term new media art. Wikipedia

Types Of Digital Art:

Digital Photography

The artist uses a digital or regular camera. The photographs are digitized and translated to the computer or phone environment where the artist uses image editing and special effects software to perform darkroom type manipulations.

This combines the disciplines of photography and painting. The artist uses image editing and paints software to go beyond darkroom techniques to add further expression to the image. Often when doing this I am making a base image to use other methods as well.

Digital Collage

This is a combining of many images from varying sources into one image. This is most commonly achieved by the use of layering techniques in image editing and paint software, this is the type I do the most. The artist may also use images from x-rays or radar to produce images that the eye does not normally see, which expands the realm of human perception. Just a bit off-topic I do this with videos a lot.

Integrated Digital Art

This is the “mixed media” of the digital art world. Artists combine any number of techniques to achieve unique results. The digital environment is much less restricted than conventional mediums in this type of integration and manipulation. Bingo! this is the key I found to make things really the best you can make.  It also allows you to try many new things.

Digital Painting

2D: The artist creates 2D images totally in the computer virtual environment with the use of painting tools that emulate natural media styles. Sometimes referred to as “Natural Media”.

3D: The artist uses 3D modeling and rendering software to essentially sculpt in virtual space. This method also makes use of all of the other methods.

Vector Drawing

The artist uses vector drawing software and creates the image totally in the virtual environment. This makes use of shapes which are outlined and can be filled with various colors and patterns. This tends to produce a harder-edged or graphic look. This is awesome to really create.  I found it much harder to do, not due to lack of content to create but skill with the software. Practice makes perfect, I need more practice.

This is art produced exclusively by mathematical manipulations. This is the so-called “computer-generated” art. The art here lies in the invention of the mathematical formulas themselves and the way the programs are written to take advantage of the display capabilities of the hardware. The art also lies in the creative intentions and subsequent selections of the artist/mathematician.  You make think this is the hardest and in a way you are correct.  I am a website designer so work often with "math"

Original Work “Rules” Tips

A “work of visual art” is a painting, drawing, print or sculpture, existing in a single copy, in a limited edition of 200 copies or fewer that are signed and consecutively numbered by the author, or, in the case of a sculpture, in multiple cast, carved, or fabricated sculptures of 200 or fewer that are consecutively numbered by the author and bear the signature or other identifying mark of the author.

For digital artists, this still applies. Digital painting or drawing illustration created in Adobe Photoshop, Corel Painter, or any other image-based software, is considered a “painting”. Digital drawings created in Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw, etc., i.e. vector illustrations are “drawings”.

A “derivative work” is a work based upon one or more preexisting works, such as a translation, musical arrangement, dramatization, fictionalization, motion picture version, sound recording, art reproduction, abridgment, condensation, or any other form in which a work may be recast, transformed, or adapted. A work consisting of editorial revisions, annotations, elaborations, or other modifications, which, as a whole, represent an original work of authorship, is a “derivative work”.

It is highly advisable to exercise caution when using published work as a reference source. As alluded to in copyright law, every photograph, artwork, artifact, etc. is copyright protected.  And through the internet, gathering reference copies of images has never been easier.

I have been for a long time using my vectors that I have purchased and the logos that I had custom designed by artist and on the copyrights to manipulating and using digital effects to make products on sites such as red bubble.
